The central government has raised the subsidy amount for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries from Rs 200 to Rs 300 per LPG cylinder. This means that Ujjwala beneficiaries will now pay Rs 603 for a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder, as against the market price of Rs 903.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur made this announcement during a cabinet decision briefing, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting the beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
The decision comes just a month after the centre reduced the price of cylinders for domestic cooking gas by Rs 200 for all consumers.
As of now, Ujjwala beneficiaries have been paying ₹703 for a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder, compared to the market price of ₹903. With this recent decision by the Union Cabinet, they will now pay ₹603 for the same cylinder.
Updated LPG cylinder rates in major cities:
City | Domestic cylinder (14.2kg) | For Ujjwala beneficiaries (14.2kg) | Commercial cylinder (19kg) |
Delhi | 903 | 603 | 1731.5 |
Kolkata | 929 | 629 | 1839 |
Mumbai | 902.5 | 602.5 | 1684 |
Chennai | 918 | 618 | 1898 |
This decision comes on the heels of a previous move in August when the government had reduced the price of LPG cylinders for all consumers by ₹200. Union Minister Thakur had stated that due to this additional subsidy, there could be an additional financial implication of ₹7,680 crore for the financial year 2023-24.
The decision to raise subsidies for Ujjwala beneficiaries comes just ahead of assembly elections in five states, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana. It is expected to provide significant relief to economically disadvantaged households and is likely to have political implications in the forthcoming elections.
